Protect against burns

• Use oven mitts or thermal mitts (keep these by the hot plate), or let item cool

​

Protect against fires

• Avoid heating flammable and reactive materials, evaluate hazards/controls
• Use required overtemperature automatic shut off if used to heat flammables and left unattended
• Turn off when not in use, unplug for extended periods
• Plug into a wall outlet and check the rest of the circuit for competing high-current devices

Prevent container cracks

• Be careful and inspect glassware when condensing the material in a vessel until it’s completely dry, the vessel can crack

​

Use a compatible container

• Avoid using metal that can arc, or materials that may melt from the heat

​

Contain spills

• Have compatible absorbent materials on hand and/or use secondary containment for liquids"

​

Prevent electrical shock

• Only use hot plates that are NRTL listed
• Check cords for issues: worn, frayed, or damaged must be taken out of service
