Preliminary analysis

Office of Institutional Research & Analytics

2 of 49

Highlights

Sample

  • The response rate was 20% for current students (N=7,370), which is quite high given there was no incentive.
    • Current student survey sample is comprised of a notably higher percentage of female students than the spring 2021 student population
    • AOS Health Science contributed more responses than other AOS.
  • Fewer applicants responded (N=673) and their relatively small sample size should be weighted appropriately when interpreting results.
  • More than 50% of faculty responded to the survey.

Results

  1. Current students expressed a strong preference for online courses. Approximately 60% responded they were interested or very interested in these modalities: distance learning synchronous, online asynchronous, and Hy-flex.

  • 40% of current students were interested in face-to-face and 37% in hybrid. Note, students could select multiple options.
    • Gateway math courses and speech had the highest preference for face-to-face.
    • EDUC 1300, GOVT 2305 and 2306, and HIST 1301 and 1302 had the strongest preference for distance learning synchronous and online asynchronous.

  • Faculty had the highest preference for online synchronous courses (65%), followed by face-to-face (56%) and online asynchronous (56%).

  • The top factors that affect student course taking preferences were (1) course availability, (2) time of day, and (3) modality.

  • More than 75% of current students indicated they were interested or very interested in opportunities of online advising, tutoring, and other support services. 45% were interested or very interested in these same supports in-person.

  • There are only small differences by race/ethnicity in course modality preferences. Hispanic students have a slightly higher preference for face-to-face.
