Global Citizenship- An Ignatian definition

Global Citizens are those who continuously seek to deepen their awareness of their place and responsibility in an increasingly interconnected world, both locally and globally; those who stand in solidarity with others in the pursuit of a sustainable earth and a more humane world as true companions in the mission of reconciliation and justice.

Ignatian Global Scholars Program

JSN Ignatian Global Scholar Certificate Requirements:

To earn an Ignatian Global Scholars Certificate from the Jesuit Schools Network, students will successfully complete 7 of 9 components, selecting at least 1 component from each of the following categories:

  1. Context (3 options)
  2. Experience (2 options)
  3. Reflection
  4. Action (2 options)
  5. Evaluation

A minimum of 4 semesters are required to complete the certificate

CONTEXT

Curriculum Students complete a minimum of 4 courses with a global dimension

Lakota History European History AP Comparative Government

History of Latin America AP Art History AP Environmental Science

History of Totalitarianism Social Justice Social Justice in Action

African American Literature IT MLD: Spanish Culture and Ignatian Spirituality (Camino course)

IT Classics Colonialism and the Cold War in Africa

World Languages (Spanish, French, Chinese, Latin, Greek)

*World Language Study may fulfill 1 course of this requirement if the student does not pursue the language study component on the program

Language study

Students will complete a minimum of three years while in the program. (Freshman year foreign language does not count)

* if taking an AP foreign language prior to senior year, a score of 3, 4, or 5 will fulfill the requirement

Global Events

Students will participate in 2 different events each year that have an Ignatian global citizenship focus. ie. speaker series, reading list, workshops, etc.

EXPERIENCE

Intercultural Experience

Students should take part in a sustained lived experience where they form a relationship with an organization, group, or set of people that allows them to interact with a culturally diverse group while sharing a common vision. This should help them deepen their awareness of their place and responsibilities in our interconnected world.

    • IT MLD: Cultural and Ignatian Spirituality (Camino course)

Extracurricular Involvement

Students will have yearly involvement with a group that focuses on either the pursuit of a sustainable earth, more humane world, or increasing interconnectedness and understanding of other perspectives

REFLECTION

Ongoing and Culminating reflection: Students will continuously complete self-reflections to evaluate their work in becoming a global citizen and understand their relationship with God (once per semester). At the end of the program, they should complete a final reflection project to review their time in the program and how they will use what they have learned moving forward.

ACTION

  • Service: Students should complete a yearly local relationship-building project that correlates to the global citizenship goals as articulated in the Ignatian definition, ie. community clean-ups (Care for our Common Home), tutoring students, local service through Campus Ministry

  • Project: Students will complete a project with a global focus, which should be shared with other community members, ie. research project with a presentation to interested faculty, art display focused on immigrant experiences, action campaign with the school or local community

  1. Application period opens January of Freshman year
  2. Notification of acceptance: March
  3. Approval meeting with advisor (IGS Planning Document): April/May
  4. Program components commence: Fall of Sophomore year
