Observation about Nonprofits/Social Enterprises building Tech-Capabilities

11 of 45

Challenges + Needs to building tech capacity

Translating non-tech business models

Social enterprises may have business models that center on in-person activities which can be difficult to scale digitally. Enterprises need support to understand the digital tools best suited to their business model.

Network + connections

Social enterprises and nonprofits may not have as robust of a network to support their technology growth and strategy. They may need more support in building industry relationships or navigating products.

Hiring

Social enterprises and nonprofits may struggle to hire technical roles due to funding disparities that make it difficult to compete with the tech sector.

Funding

Growing your technology offering or infrastructure is a major long-term recurring investment. As social enterprises and nonprofits can often be seen as “riskier” investments, they may struggle to grow their tech capacity. Nonprofit funding often prioritizes programs over infrastructure. Enterprises need flexible funding opportunities that appreciate long-term growth trajectories.

Following tech trends

Sometimes organizations can be their own roadblock to growth when they emphasize following technology trends over listening to their customers. Enterprises need support to ensure their technology infrastructure accurately reflects their customer’s needs.

TechSoup: Connecting NGOs with Mission Critical Resources

The Challenge

Global crises are on the rise with

climate change, demographic shifts,

and burgeoning autocracy upending the fabric of civil society. The world is facing rapidly rising inequities in global systems and an internet architecture that optimizes for transactions and algorithms over ethics

and human rights. NGOs face massive technology and skills gaps when responding to defend human rights and dignity.

Innovation and the design, development,

and deployment of technology is uncoordinated, and too often local

leadership in developing countries is

left out of decision-making.

The Opportunity

Grassroots community organizations and larger NGOs hold enormous potential to create inclusive value. They can bring resilience, recovery, and reconciliation.

Solution

TSGN has built the largest civil society network in the world to provide the education, access to technology, and community support that NGOs need to unlock that potential.

STEP: Reimagining Due Diligence

Streamlining due diligence for funders and amplifying the voices of smaller, national CSOs

  • Local expertise, local languages working in multiple languages, we consider funder requirements and local context to measure compliance by demonstrated processes, not checkbox requirements.
  • Tiered due diligence- funders receive detailed insights about CSOs, enabling refined funding, risk assessments, and more funding to reach small, locally based, and grassroots organizations
  • Detailed evaluation reports CSOs and funders receive nuanced, comprehensive information for risk assessments, enabling grassroots CSOs to demonstrate an ability to manage resources and deliver impactful work.
  • Shared CSO repository STEP’s repository of CSO assessments will allow easy access to information for funders and reduce the fragmentation and duplication of traditional due diligence assessments.
