Sarojini Naidu was Known as the “Cuckoo of India”, Sarojini Devi was a distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and one of the great orators of her time.

Her father Aghoranath Chattopadhyaya was a good scholar of Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, Persian and English languages.

He was the principal of  The Nizam’s College at Hyderabad, now the capital of Telangana State.

Sarojini's mother Varadasundari Devi wrote poetry in Bengali and knew Sanskrit. Sarojini was the eldest among their eight children.

All the children grew by learning and speaking Bengali, their mother tongue, Urdu, Telugu and English. One of her brothers Birendranath was a revolutionary and spent his life outside India all the time for fear of getting extradited for sedition and black waters. Another brother Harindranath was a poet, dramatist and actor.

‎She had an inclination towards writing since the age of 12. Her collection of poems ‘The Broken Wings’ was published in 1905.

‎She joined the Indian National Movement during the Bengal Partition in 1905. Her works for the country’s independence are notable.

‎She was the first Indian woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress and the first woman to become the governor of a state in India.

‎She presided over the annual session of Indian National Congress in Kanpur in 1925 and attended the East African Indian Congress in South Africa in 1929.

‎She participated in the Round Table Conference with Mahatma Gandhi and Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1930.
