The Pre-Economics Major

As a Pre-Economics major at UCSB, it is important that you understand the pre-major requirements that must be met in order to be accepted into the full major.

  • Econ 1, 2, and 10A must be completed with a 2.85 GPA.
  • We do not use community college or non-UC grades in our pre-major GPA.
  • UC ECON course grades are the only ones that are used to calculate the pre-major GPA so you’ll need to earn a B in 10A.
  • Econ 1 and 2 must have been completed prior to transferring to UCSB.
  • The two required calculus classes for the major must have been taken prior to coming to UCSB.

How to Declare Your Major?

Change of Major Petition

During the quarter you’re enrolled in your last pre-major class (usually Econ 10A, Econ 3B, and/or PStat 109), please stop by the economics undergraduate office in 2121 North Hall to complete a “change of major” petition.

  • It’s important to know this does not happen automatically.
  • Complete the petition by the end of week 8 to guarantee timely processing.
  • You will not see your major change in GOLD for approximately 4-6 weeks, as it takes the Registrar’s Office approximately that long to process the paperwork.
  • Questions about this process can be sent to ugrad@econ.ucsb.edu or answered in person when you visit us to complete the petition.
  • For detailed information please visit: https://econ.ucsb.edu/undergraduate/how-to-declare-a-major

GOLD “New Student Profile”

The UCSB Admissions office prepares a document called a ‘New Student Profile’ for every new transfer student. Please check GOLD to determine if yours is ready. This can take several months so please be patient.

  • If yours is not yet ready, the only way to clear prerequisites for Econ 10A and/or PStat 109 in fall quarter is to send a copy of your unofficial transcript(s) to ugrad@econ.ucsb.edu & ugrad@math.ucsb.edu as soon as possible.
  • If you have already done this for summer classes, you do not need to send them again.

When adding to the waitlist, students should select all of the sections that will work for their schedule. Students can add themselves to the waitlist even if they do not meet the course requirements (e.g. missing prerequisites, major limitations, level limitations, etc.); however, the Auto-Add feature will not add the course until the missing requirements are resolved.
