    • Check in with the attendance office or PSA counselor regularly to confirm that your child attended all classes

    • Check the absence and tardy section on your child’s report card and Parent Portal to make sure the number of absences and tardies are correct

Truancy (E.C. 48260)

Chronic Absenteeism

In California, truancy is defined as being absent from school for 30 minutes or more without a valid excuse on three (3) occasions.

    • Tardies or Early Leaves in excess of 30 minutes (or more) without valid excuse count towards truancy.

In LAUSD, a student is identified as chronically absent when they miss 15 school days in one school year, whether the absences are excused, unexcused, or school suspensions.

1 to 2 absences per month = 10-20 absences per year

DON’T LOSE TRACK OF YOUR STUDENT’S ABSENCES, ABSENCES ADD UP.

    • The law requires everyone between the ages of 6 and 18 years to be enrolled and attending school daily.
    • It is a parent/guardian responsibility to ensure the student attends school daily and on time.

HOW TO SAFELY SEND YOUR STUDENT TO SCHOOL

Wash hands and/or use hand sanitizer often before and after meals, restroom use, and handling tissues.

Cover coughs and sneezes to avoid spreading virus with sleeve or tissues

Get tested for COVID-19 if your student(s) has symptoms and/or if are in close contact with someone with COVID-19. For more information visit www.lausd.org/covid

WHEN SHOULD STUDENTS STAY HOME?

If your student has a mild cough/cold that is not bothering them, it is okay to send them to school. Here are some additional steps students and families can take to lower the spread of respiratory illness in school:

EXCUSED ABSENCES

    • Funeral services or grieving the death of an immediate family or person determined by the pupil’s parent/guardian to be considered part of the pupil’s immediate family due to close association (max. 5 days per incident regardless of funeral location)
    • Illness or injury of pupil
    • Medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic services
    • Mental or behavioral health (absence for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health)
    • Quarantine
    • Administrator Approval of Student Absence form may be provided to parents/guardians requesting administrator approval for “justifiable personal reason” absences.

ABSENCE VERIFICATION

LAUSD Parent Student Handbook

It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to provide documentation to verify the reason(s) for absence within 10 school days after the student returns to school in order to prevent absences from being recorded as uncleared/unexcused and counting towards truancy.

IMPORTANT:

Siblings, grandparents, cousins, other students cannot provide absence verification.

    • After 8:00 AM students are considered tardy.

    • If a student arrives 30 minutes tardy without a valid excuse, the tardy will be documented as non-compliant and will count towards truancy.

    • After 8:10 AM, students will receive a tardy note.
