This unit provides lessons to empower students to do something about the bias, discrimination and bullying they encounter. The lessons help students learn how to be an ally on an individual level and by working with others, explore social change movements over history and work on a social action project that improves their school and community.

  • Students will reflect on something they have done (or want to do) to make the world a better place and what personal characteristics have contributed to their helping others
  • Students will envision the characteristics of an ideal school and identify what needs to change in order to finish this statement
  • Students will brainstorm and select a project to make their school more equal or fair
  • Students will reflect on what they already know about Rosa Parks and will learn more about the context of Rosa Parks' actions during the Civil Rights Movement
  • Students will identify problems or concerns in their community and possible solutions to those problems
  • Students will work in small groups to devise an action plan for solving one of the identified problems.

Your Action Plan

Rosa Parks

If you could do one thing at school or in the community to make things more equal, what would you do? Why?

Talk to your child about their action plan. What are they doing? Why are they doing it?

Who was Rosa Parks? What did she do? How do you think she felt? Would you have done the same?
