ORIGIN

In 2010, when Marty Solverson (Robin Hood) was fired from his job as a detective, Thomas Tuttle, ever the ear, happened to hear what had happened. He reached out to his former student, asking if he would be interested in a teaching position at the Woodsbridge Academy. While the idea didn’t necessarily appeal to Marty, some of the other information Thomas shared did. The Business Office (always a bit of a menace to non-Traditional thinking Tales) had been putting one or two Tales with useful powers between a rock and a hard place.

And with that news the job suddenly hadn’t seemed so bad, in fact, it had started to look like the perfect cover.

Marty moved back to Woodsbridge and slowly began contacting fellow Tales who might have wanted or even needed to help fellow Tales who had fallen afoul of those in the Business Office.

And so The Hand of Grimm was born.

CODE OF CONDUCT

  • There is no rule that states that members of the HoG are barred from telling significant others, children, other family, or friends that they are part of the group. But most of them keep it secret by choice. If the Mayor and the Business Office found out exactly who was part of the illegal group nothing good would come of it.
  • You’re not allowed to leave once you’re in (at least, no one’s ever tried, and if they did the policy would be “hide the body well.” This one is obviously meant all in good fun but in their code of conduct all the same (origins here).
  • The Hand of Grimm is a fairly covert group who works to protect tales who don’t want their true identities known for whatever reason. Although the group itself consists of only a handful of members, there are murmurs of their existence. Every Tale knows a Tale who knows a Tale who knows a member of The Hand of Grimm, and though “membership” is limited, there are many who subscribe to their belief system. They believe that villains should get a second chance, that heroes aren’t obligated to do any saving, and that in the Mundane world, Tales should be free to follow their own destiny. Most members of The Hand of Grimm are not registered, although there are a few who are. Regardless, they believe that no one should have to tell anyone which tale they came from or what their powers are. Telling others should be a personal choice, not a Government mandated one.

SUCCESSFUL MISSIONS

Past missions have included:

  • Helping registered “villains” get jobs. Bellamy McIntyre is the best example, the HoG helped her get her current position as an elementary school teacher.
  • Helping residents “unregister” back before there was a proper procedure for this. In the years immediately after registration went into effect, many Tales regretted registering but couldn’t get their names taken off the list. The HoG aided several people in their attempts, until a procedure for “unregistering” was eventually adopted.
  • Sometimes unregistering wasn’t enough. For residents who were receiving particularly harsh threats and wanted to leave Woodsbridge for good, the HoG has obtained new identities for several Tales desperate to start over again.

AMARA CARROLL

MAID MARIAN/ROBIN HOOD | UNREGISTERED

AUGMENTATION

PROFESSOR OF GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL SCIENCE

RECRUITED BY: MARTY SOLVERSON

PB: Audra McDonald

Amara was recruited by Marty upon arriving back in town. He'd already been aware of her shared opinions on the matter and it was a no brainer for her. She has a firm belief that people should be safe to make independent decisions, and that no one was beholden to their Tale. People could make their own lives here, and she would passionately fight on the behalf of the "villains."

SUPER STRENGTH

PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY

FOUNDING MEMBER

PB: John Cho

Gideon’s interest in philosophy and intense interest in puzzling out everything was what led him to these beliefs, at quite an early age. Why are we (Tales) here? Why do we only remember one life, our original story? Are we destined to repeat our stories? Gideon came to the conclusion that, no — a new life meant a new path, should you choose it. He was outspoken about his beliefs through high school and even more so in college, and so it was likely easy for Marty, already a good friend of his, to approach him about the Hand of Grimm, knowing exactly where he stood.

IAN GORMAN

SIR GUY OF GISBORNE/ROBIN HOOD | UNREGISTERED

ARMOR PHYSIOLOGY/OBJECT STRENGTH & AGILITY

PART-TIME PROFESSOR OF PHYSIOLOGY /PART-TIME VETERINARIAN

FOUNDING MEMBER

PB: Henry Simmons

Ian will never completely understand how he and Marty ended up growing up together. But every time he worried that evil ran through his blood, Marty was there to smack him around and remind him how stupid of an idea that was.

He’s not at all comfortable with the things he did in his past Tale life. He believes that everyone has free will. That, more than anything, has steered him in the direction of Anti-Traditionalism.

SONIC SCREAM

DETECTIVE

RECRUITED BY: IAN GORMAN

PB: Marsha Thomason

Rachel was recruited by Ian sometime after arriving in Woodsbridge. She’d never wanted to be a Tale, never mind a “villain,” given the stigma that goes along with the title, never wanted a superpower that could potentially kill someone if she wasn’t careful, and remains fairly bitter about it even now. However, she managed to find a sense of belonging with some other like-minded people, who had issues with the Tale life, as well, and hopes that their efforts will one day mean that her life can go back to normal.

WATER MANIPULATION/WATER WEAPONS/HANDS OF WATER

ARCHEOLOGIST

RECRUITED BY: JASON HUGHES

PB: Monica Bellucci

Recruited to the group by her longtime friend and Talemate, Naomi found the the Hand of Grimm was a natural fit. Not only is she considered a ‘villain’ in her own Tale, but her son could likewise be persecuted for his destructive abilities.

She firmly believes that their past lives are just that; stories that are over and done with. She has no issue with remembering and learning from the past, but she looks at their lives now as something completely separate, a fresh start. This is a philosophy she reminds her Talemates about often. She actively, if secretly, works against the Business Office learning too much about Tales who wish to remain anonymous.
