Long term plans:

  • Current career goals include wanting to work as a staff psychologist for the VA.

Advice:

  • Be flexible with change! As an undergraduate, folks who go to graduate school are often top of their classes etc. The things that worked for you before may not necessarily work in graduate school so be comfortable with trying new things to help study adn so forth.

Long term plans:

Martha Avila-Jimenez: MSW at SDSU and PPSC!

Involvements Over the Years:

  • Peer Mentor Program
  • Bounce Back Retention Program Peer Coach/TA
  • Undergraduate Psychology Peer Advisor
  • BrightSide Produce Intern
  • Psychology Club member
  • Active Minds member
  • Latinx Student Union (LSU) member
  • Latino Student Social Work Association (LSSWA) member
  • Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT).

*PPSC= Pupil Personnel Services Credential

Background:

  • From the valley up in Northern California (Manteca to be exact)
  • graduated from SDSU with my Bachelor's in Psychology with a Minor in Women's Studies

Long term plans:

  • Not sure yet! Want to obtain my license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) as soon as possible and interested in various populations. I hope to try out, at least once, high school social work, crisis intervention, medical social work, juvenile justice, and maybe private practice.

Advice:

  • Enjoy the process of grad school! It can be so easy to become consumed in the madness and busyness of everything thrown at you but remember to enjoy the fun moments to avoid burning out. Also, make sure to establish as much social support as possible as well as a form of enjoyable self-care. This will make the rigors of grad school much easier to manage. Last but not least, if you do not already have some Type A personality traits or skills, start adapting them! Being organized and having priorities scheduled will tremendously influence your success in grad school.

  • I did have an honors minor and stats minor but I dropped both to graduate early ;p

Long term plans:

  • I want to pursue a position in Higher Education Administration, and maybe even be a Prof one day! Right now, I am excited to start working as a graduate assistant in USC’s admissions in the fall!

Advice:

  • Start building connections with profs ASAP. Letters of rec are IMPORTANT
  • Start your app EARLY and check it twice or even 3 times..
  • YOU HAVE TIME. It’s okay to change your mind in what you want to do!!!!!

TAKE A DEEP BREATH. It is so easy to get stressed out but at the end of the day things will be okay. Relax, live your life, learn from your experiences; good and bad. Perspective is everything

Advice:

  • Even if an experience you had might not seem relevant to your academics, still use it and find a creative way to talk about it
  • Make sure you are going for a holistic approach, it’s not just about GPA, extracurriculars, leadership, etc → try to have at least one in each category
  • There are other ways to connect with professors for LoR besides being in the classes they teach, I found it too difficult to connect with professors in large lectures

Everything is meant to happen the way it is going to happen, realizing that you are doing the best you can and you are going to get out what you put in, so as long as you are doing the best you can YOU WILL BE OKAY! Everything has a way of working out in the end:)
