Start with the Unit/Lesson Goal
During this unit, students will be able to make connections to the characters in the book by reflecting on journeys they have made in their own lives. They will analyze events in the story to explore their impact on characterizations. Students will be able to make connections to events that occur in their own lives and how these events have impacted their own sense of self.

Lesson Plan
Introduction: Border art video (5 minutes)
Vocabulary Slides (10 minutes) + partner dialog
La Frontera video + discussion (30 minutes); students complete graphic organizer as we watch and talk about the video
La Frontera story map slides planning; students select 4 events in groups of 3 (10 minutes)
Closing: Groups write 4 events on post-its; event post-its are categorized (10 minutes)
