Strings

I’m looking forward to another great year of music making with our young cellists and violinists! Lessons are held during the school day, and are available for students in grades 1 and 2.

Academics in Action

Dear Families,

We are excited to share that our school is implementing a

Mathematics and Reading program called i-Ready.

i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. To begin, we’ll be administering the i-Ready Diagnostic from 9/9-9/27 in Grades 1 & 2 for Math and Grade 2 for Reading. It’s critical that students try their best so we can get accurate data that will help inform our instruction and drive the online lessons students receive.

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to try their best on each question, try not to rush, and understand that they will not know the answer to every question.

Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your child’s learning! To learn more about i-Ready, visit i-ReadyCentral.com/FamilyCenter.

Click here to complete the String Lesson Sign-Up Form. Please note that due to staffing, the strings program at Poquonock will have a limited enrollment. Students that are new to the string program will be accepted on a “first come, first served” basis.

Please contact Andrea Luan at aluan@windsorct.org with questions about the string program.

Change of Clothing

Many times students have spills from food/drink, get wet on the playground and may have an accident even though they are potty trained. Please be sure your child has an extra set of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear and socks, and a sweatshirt for the classroom)

Fever: 100.5F , children should stay home during the course of a fever and may return to school when they have been fever free for 24 hours without any medication to reduce fever.

Reminder: Medications may not be sent in with the students. A parent/ guardian must deliver the medication to the nurse.

All medications need to have an authorization administration form from your doctor .

Safety is ALL of Our Responsibility

School Bus Safety

Stop for school buses

Many students rely on school buses to get them to and from school safely.

Did You Know: School buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road; they’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries; and in every state, stop-arm laws exist to protect children from other motorists.

If you are driving, remember these simple rules:

  • Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
  • Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you can start driving again.
  • Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.

Parents - talk bus safety with your children:

Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach them to play it SAFE:

  • Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
  • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
  • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
  • Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

Bicycle Safety

Staying safe on two wheels

As the public health emergency continues, many people have turned to bicycle riding as fun way to get out and exercise, or have taken the opportunity to teach their children to ride a bike. Bicycles can also be an easy and quick way to travel to school. Be sure to do these simple things to keep your bike ride safe:

  • Always wear a correctly fitted helmet, and securely fasten the chin strap.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic, and follow traffic signs and signals.
  • Stay in the bike lane whenever possible.
  • Never use electronics while riding – they are distracting.

Pedestrian Safety

Watch the road

Virtual learning, in-person instruction, or somewhere in between – it’s likely you or your child will be a pedestrian at some point in the day. Remind them to:

  • Use the sidewalk whenever possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.
  • Whenever they are available, use marked crosswalks to cross the street, and look left-right-left for vehicles or bikes before crossing.
  • Make sure you never play, push or shove others when you walk around traffic.
  • Everyone should watch the road, not their phones.

If you are driving, especially in a neighborhood, look out for pedestrians at all times, everywhere. Foot traffic is likely to be higher as more families and children are at home.

Child Safety

Keep your vehicle locked

Since many families are at home more often during the public health emergency, it’s important to remember to lock all unattended vehicles. Young children can see a car as a playground, and crawl in and get trapped.

We recognize this school year will again look different for families, but let’s work hard to keep it safe for everyone. Whether you’re a driver, pedestrian, bicyclist, or bus rider – stay alert and drive safely.

Mr. Batchelder

Every month as a school we will be focusing each month on different character traits we want the students to practice here at Poquonock and at home. Be on the lookout at home for your child practicing these monthly character traits, initial this form and send it back to school!

The monthly focus for September is Kindness!!

Some examples of Kindness include:

  • Complimenting a friend
  • Giving a friend a hi-5 or waving with a smile.
  • Helping a friend feel better when they are sad.
  • Help a friend clean up after themselves.
  • Help family at home clean up.
  • Use good manners.

News from Tree House!

Hello POQ Families of 2024/2025!

Tree House has completed its first week and wow are we excited!

Poquonock Tree House enrollment is the highest its been in 3 years! In that time, we've seen Kindergarten move up the 1st grade, some 2nd graders move on to upper elementary, and met so many outstanding new students!

We feel humbled by the relationships we've built with students and have a crop of students now that model exemplary behavior and skill to the newest Tree House kids.

This school year we look forward to building more skills in students who work with us! Carrying teaching from the classroom directly into our games and social time, taking time to work alongside families and students to find what works best for us all, and having more fun each year than the last!

Look forward to many updates soon to come and thank you again, Tree House Poquonock families, for choosing this town, this school, and this program.
