Honors English 10

In Honors English 10, students will read great literature and explore the literary devices, styles, and themes inherent in those works. The core works (as well as the summer reading selections) share common themes: self-discovery, society’s impact on the individual, successes and failures in human relationships, and individuals’ handling of adversity.

Goals of the course are for all students to read well, to deepen their literary analysis skills, and to gain perspective on an array of discussion topics.

This course also aims to develop students’ skills in written expression, public speaking, and vocabulary usage.

So many of you don’t have time to read. Some of you dislike it because you haven’t found the right book. In order to establish a love for reading, you will be given time in class to read a book of your choice for 10 minutes. You will keep track of how many pages you read so that you can see your progress over the course of the year!

Independent Reading

  1. Only summatives can be retaken.
  2. Retakes must be scheduled within two weeks from the day the original summative assessment was handed back.
  3. The higher of the two scores stands.
  4. ALL classwork and assignments must be completed in order to retake as well as a retake learning plan.
  5. Students may retest once per semester only.

Retakes

Google Classroom

Assignments, agendas, notes, readings and handouts will be provided on Google Classroom. Pay attention to it, especially if you are absent!

------------------------------------------

Missed/Late Work

It is your responsibility to make up classwork. Check Google Classroom/agenda slides first, and THEN ask me. If work is not submitted by the time overall grading occurs, a zero will be entered into Skyward.

Missed an assignment or quiz? It’s your job to know if you missed one or not. Again, check Classroom.

Quiz makeups need to be arranged by YOU.

Late formative work can be submitted late with no penalty. All late formative work MUST be submitted by THE MID-POINT SUMMATIVE OR THE END OF A UNIT (whichever comes first).

Late summative assessments (project, paper, presentation) will be given a zero in Skyward until submitted. If a summative assessment is late, you lose the opportunity to revise/retake. Late summative assessments will not be accepted after ONE WEEK past the original due date (unless otherwise discussed *in-person* with me).

Electronics (including cell phones, iPods, handheld gaming devices, headphones/earbuds, personal laptops, etc.), per the district Cell Phone and Electronic Device Usage Policy, must be kept in student backpacks at all times. If listening to music during independent work and/or watching content-related videos, headphones that plug into the Chromebook should be used.

*Smart watches will be removed during quizzes and/or test.*
