Ecological footprint is what we consume

Which areas do we need?

Wood, paper, viscose

Houses,

factories,

Schools,

Food,

fodder

green area to bind the CO2 deriving from fossil fuels

Fish,

seafood

built-up

areas

farmland

pasture

oceans,

waters

forest

Meat, milk,…

The Ecological Footprint

  • It is WHAT WE CONSUME
  • ... is expressed in global hectares (gha) per year
  • 1 gha = 10,000 m² with the biological productivity of the world average
  • What is a hectare???

8 of 97

EUROPE

  • Ecological footprint/person = 3.01 gha
  • Biocapacity/person = 1 gha
  • If everybody lived like an European,

we would need more than THREE planets!

OUR APPROACH TO FOOD

How much food do you suppose is thrown away?

0 10 20 30 40%

Does it matter that so much food is thrown away?

If so, why?

What is being wasted?

  • Cultivation area
  • Energy for production, harvesting, processing and transport
  • Ressources (water, fertilizer ...)

?

Waste:

About 40% of all foods in

the world are never eaten!

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Consume food wisely:

Prefer seasonal and local products,

as much as possible from organic farming

Don´t waste food

PAPER & FURNITURE

  • 3.000.000.000.000 trees in the world

15.000.000.000 trees are cut each year

  • Deforestation: 46% less trees since the beginning of human civilization
  • It takes a lot of time for a tree to grow: VIDEO

PAPER

One ton of paper needs the equivalent of:

24 trees

26,500

liters

of water

Average paper consumption

in Romania /year

43 kg per person

FURNITURE

    • Prefer furniture produced by local industries
    • (reduce the transport )

    • Choose furniture pieces that are recyclable
    • and easy to disassemble

    • Prefer durable furniture

20 pieces of clothing

per person are manufactured each year.

In 2014, the average consumer purchased 60 percent more items of clothing and shoes than in 2000

but each garment is kept half as long.

HOLIDAYS

    • Holidays include
      • Travel transport

      • Accommodation

      • Food

      • Shopping

      • Local travel

What can you do 5R:

1. Refuse: things that you don’t really need and produce garbage

Refuse plastic bag usage, disposable plastic, printed bills and brochures, cheap furniture, clothes and shoes with unusual colors (fashion is changing fast)

2. Reduce: the number of things that you cannot refuse

Paper usage, clothes, shoes, furniture, mobile, electronic devices

3. Reuse: use things again for the same or for a different purpose, repair

Clothes, shoes, furniture, sports equipment by using second hand goods

4. Recycle: what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse

Glass, plastic, aluminum, paper. Buy recycled paper.

5. Rot: compost the rest materials

Vegetable food, wood chips, sawdust from spruce timber, pets’ crap (with wood pellets)
