How to get started with Dual Credit

  1. Apply to HCC thru www.applytexas.org
      • Be sure to select the correct term (Summer 2025 or Fall 2025) Choose the earliest time you will be taking classes – you don’t need both.
      • Be sure you use your Social Security Number if you have one as it will make the process so much smoother. If you do not have one, HCC will assign you a P# in its place, but you will need to keep this secure and handy.
      • If you are a returning dual credit student DO NOT submit again begin at STEP 3
      • It takes up to 3 business days to receive an HCC ID number via email. You must have your HCC ID before you can continue. DO NOT wait until the last minute to submit the HCC application. You will risk missing the deadline.
  2. Follow the instructions and pay attention to the February 13th deadline. If you want to take both Summer & Fall classes, you will need to submit the paperwork twice
  3. Complete & turn in all the paperwork to Mrs. Hines (Rm. 223)
  4. Select Dual Credit Course(s) you want to take in SchooLinks during the course selection process
  5. Please note that dual credit classes are capped by HCC and there are limited spots. Seats will be given on a first-come, first-served basis
  6. If you receive 504 or Special Education services, you must contact HCC’s Office of Ability Services and complete the paperwork to receive accommodations for your dual credit classes (even those taught AT Kempner High School)

Do I have to Pay for Dual Credit?

TEXTBOOKS

  • All DC students must pay for their textbooks. Each instructor will inform students which books are required. Some are included in the HCC Canvas platform – be advised that there will be a fee involved and will show up on your HCC account as payment due (course materials fee).
  • YOU MUST PAY THIS!

OUT-OF-DISTRICT FEES

  • HCC provides an in-district tuition waiver for DC students; FBISD covers the out-of-district fee that HCC charges. This is not paid by FBISD until after you have completed the semester course.
  • DO NOT PAY THIS PORTION OF THE FEES OWED ON YOUR HCC ACCOUNT!

Can a Dual Credit Course be Dropped?

  • Yes – there are two specific drop deadlines for HCC Courses.
    • DROP - 10 days from the start of class – nothing will show on your HCC transcript; your counselor can transfer you to a regular course if this is a class required for graduation. Please be advised that we don’t encourage dropping if you qualify for the course – you can most likely handle the work!
    • WITHDRAWAL – later in the semester and will show as a “W” o your HCC transcript; depending on when you withdraw, you may need to be enrolled in an online Edgenuity class to complete the credit needed.
      • Students who drop for a “W” will be charged a $15 fee by FBISD
      • You can have no more than 6 total “W”’s in your entire college career so think about that before signing up for the class.
    • You can also be put on academic probation if you fail a class or your grades are consistently below a 2.0 (D).
