How to request teacher letters of Recommendation

  1. Check school websites to see what is required for recommendations

  • Ask your teacher(s) in person using this form

1. Select a teacher

2. Select the school(s)

3. Write a note to each teacher

Don’t select all. Choose which schools you want the teacher to send your recommendation to.

**If you add schools, you need to tell your teachers and counselor as these do not get sent automatically.

If you need a counselor recommendation, the process is a bit different, so follow along…

Counselor Letters of Recommendation

  • Go to your initials in the top right hand corner.

  • Click on Surveys from your school

1. Fill out the Counselor Survey. The more info, the better!

2. Make an appointment with your counselor.

3. Your counselor will only write your recommendation AFTER this meeting has occurred.

  • Contact the school and let them know YOUR part of the application will be on time, but the school’s information may come in late.
  • In order to avoid this issue make sure you give your recommenders plenty of time. Asking as soon as TODAY or tomorrow is a good idea!
  • REMEMBER: You do NOT need to wait for recommendations to be sent before you submit your application. These are 2 separate processes.

Tips for submitting the Common Application.

  • Many schools have supplemental questions.
  • Submit each college separately under “my colleges” tab.
  • Each section of the Common App needs a green check mark before you are able to submit.
  • You’ll be shown a draft before you officially submit your application. PROOFREAD!
  • You’ll be asked to pay for each application separately.
  • Double check your green checklist (both sides).

Thank You Notes

  • It is HIGHLY recommended that you write your teachers, coaches, counselors, etc. a THANK YOU note after they have written a letter of recommendation for you. This is a life skill that will go a looooooong way.
  • Don’t forget!! Write one right away!!
