Music 6 Module 1
Learning Competency to be developed
Identifies the values of the notes/rests used in a particular song.
MU6RH-la-1
Objective
At the end of this activity, learners should be able to identify the values of the notes/rests used in a particular song.
Let’s Recall
A B
1. whole note a.
2. quarter note b.
3. half note c.
4. eighth rest d.
5. quarter rest e.
B. Draw the symbol for each of the following notes and rests.
1. quarter note –
2. sixteenth rest –
3. whole note –
4. half note –
5. quarter rest –
Let’s Understand
Kinds of notes and their time value
Musical notes are symbols that represent sound. Study the different kinds of notes and their time values in the table below.
Name | Symbol
| Time Value |
whole note | | 4 beats |
half note | | 2 beats |
quarter note | | 1 beats |
eighth note | | 1/2 beats |
sixteenth note | | 1/4 beats |
Kinds of rest and their time value
A rest is a symbol that is used to represent silence. Just like notes, there are also different kinds of rest. Each rest has its corresponding time value.
Study the table below.
Name | Symbol
| Time Value |
whole rest | | 4 beats of silence |
half rest | | 2 beats of silence |
quarter rest | | 1 beats of silence |
eighth rest | | 1/2 beats of silence |
sixteenth rest | | 1/4 beats of silence |
In music, when a dot (.) is placed after a note or a rest, it indicates an increase of the time value by one half of its original value.
dotted quarter note | + . 1 ½ |
1 1/2 beats |
dotted half note |
+ . 2 1 |
3 beats |
. dotted quarter rest |
+ . 1 ½ |
1 1/2 beats of silence |
. dotted half rest
|
+ . 2 1 |
3 beats of silence |
Let’s Apply
Write the total number of beats in the following sets of notes and rests.
1. + + + =
2. + + =
3. + + + =
4. + + =
5. + + =
Let’s Analyze
Rhythm is the regular recurrence of long and short sounds. It is the flow and movement in music. You usually respond to it by nodding your head, snapping your fingers, or stomping your feet.
Musical notes represent sounds while rests represent silence. In music, when a dot (.) is placed after a note or a rest, it indicates an increase of the time value by one half of its original value.
Just as a child needs to learn the alphabet in order to read and write words, one must also have mastery of the musical notes and rests and their time values to be able to read or write music.
The long and short sounds produced by these notations create organized musical patterns that result to producing music.
Let’s Evaluate
Below is a musical composition. Study and identify each note and rest and give its corresponding time value. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.
Let’s Create
Draw notes and rests based on the given time value.
Example: 3 beats using quarter notes and eighth rests =
1. 3 beats using a half note and quarter rest =
2. 4 beats using sixteenth notes and eighth rests =
3. 3 beats using sixteenth notes =
4. 4 beats using eighth notes and eighth rests =
5. 2 beats using a quarter rest and eighth note =
