Abstract

Our project solved the problem of deciding which pillow is better for your health, alleviating many problems such as cramps, cricks, and soreness from a bad night’s sleep. We conducted tests, then put our data into a data chart. Then, we found that regular pillows were favored among our small group of people, over cubed pillows. From personal experience, we can say that there are many ads on platforms such as YouTube for memory foam cube pillows. Now that we studied it deeply, we can confidently say that their advertisements are wrong and not helpful at all. Our project can help physicians, doctors, therapists, and more for helping find the perfect pillow for their patients. We plan on increasing our data pool in the future to make our data more accurate and helpful. Please enjoy our slideshow!

Background Research

Understanding which pillow is better for your health is important! Many sleepers get many cricks or aches from sleeping with the wrong pillow, whether the problem is height, width, or shape. To understand this problem, we went to various sites, reviews, and quizzes to first do some background research. There were varied ideas and results, but mostly people liked regular pillows over memory foam cube pillows.

Hypothesis

We think that rounded pillows are better for your health because square pillows provide comfort to a very limited amount of people, even though they are reputed to reduce neck pain and shoulder pain for side-sleepers.

Discussion

Our study investigated if people preferred regular pillows or square pillows. We collected data by asking a small amount of people around our school and around our houses. The group of people mainly chose regular pillows while we only asked a small group of people but we can presume that if we asked a larger group of people their answers would be mainly regular pillows. Most people chose regular pillows because of the comfort, another reason for choosing regular pillows is because they fit their mattress size. Regular pillows are also quite common or used because it is best for side or stomach sleepers. 90% of people chose regular pillows over square pillows, with just 10% choosing square pillows. One error we made was that the data pool was very limited, in age, gender, and ethnicity. We could have collected more data to make it more accurate. Our project did go the way we expected, and our study could be used to help people get the pillows they need.

Conclusion

Our hypothesis is that regular pillows are better than square pillows. Our hypothesis was proven correct because many people we asked chose regular pillows. Many of there reasons included that regular pillows were more comfortable and soft. Out of our group of people one person chose square and their reason was because of neck pains and said that the square pillow would help support their neck better. Overall regular pillows rule over square pillows but it mainly depends on preferences. Our study could be used to determine the correct pillow for your body, helping many people with aches and pains after sleeping with the wrong pillow. Further steps? We could enlarge the data pool to include many other people, increasing the accuracy of our graph and percentages. In conclusion, this project could be enlarged and impact many people.

Reflection/Application

Our background research helped us formulate our hypothesis because it shows the pros and cons of sleeping with either pillow, which we concluded to be the rounded regular pillow. By seeing the pros and cons of both pillows it gave us a better understanding why our group of people chose either pillow. If we show this study to the public we can help doctors, physical therapists, and other physical medicinal doctors by showing which pillow would be better for their patient to use based on preferences and medical guidance. Working on this project as a team can benefit this project greatly. Benefits of working on a team together is that we can get both team members perspective on which pillow they would choose and why. Learning from this project is helpful because n ext time we would want a more diverse palette of ethnicities for our data. To conclude, our background research helped us formulate a hypothesis by showing why both pillows are good and bad. We also explained who or why this could help. Lastly, the benefits of working together as a team is that we each have each other’s experience and thoughts to rely on. Working together, we can get more done, and have a non-biased approach. Overall, working together on this fun Science Fair was amazing, helping us find our passion and learn to formulate an entire plan and slideshow. We plan to come again!
