Document share settings

in Google Classroom

Share settings for google docs / slides / sheets, etc.:

  • A: Students can view file: All students can read the file, but not edit it (“view only” rights)
  • B: Students can edit file: All students share the same file and can all make changes to it (think of it as one big collaborative doc for your whole class - you won’t usually use this setting)
  • C: Make a copy for each student: This is the one you will use the most!! Students get their own copy of the file with their name added to the document title. For Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files, both you and the student can edit the document. When students turn in the assignment, they can’t edit the document until you return it to them.** IMPORTANT NOTE: This option is only available BEFORE you post an assignment. You can’t change this setting without making a new assignment.

Creating Assignments in Google Classroom

If you don’t attach anything, students will see the following options on the assignment screen:“+ Add or create”

  • Add from: Google Drive; Link; File;
  • Create new: Docs; Slides; Sheets; Drawing

This is helpful for upper grade students who don’t need a teacher-created template, or for students to do things like a quick write, or to submit something that they created before you posted an assignment in google classroom. When they click on the option to create a new doc from the assignment screen, it will name the assignment “Student name - Assignment name” and connect it to the assignment in classroom.

Creating Announcements in

Google Classroom

Announcements are posts with no assignments - you can add attachments, but students can only VIEW them, they cannot edit documents attached to an “announcement”. Announcements are posted on the “stream” page, not the assignment page.

Creating Announcements in

Google Classroom

Why use announcements?

  • Remind students of an upcoming test
  • Schedule reminders (short day, no school, etc.)
  • Congratulate students on accomplishments
  • Field trip / permission slip reminders

Why NOT use announcements?

  • Cannot be assigned a topic
  • Can clutter your classroom
  • Can easily get buried in the stream
  • Cannot be used as an assignment

Creating topics in Google Classroom

Topics are the key to good google classroom organization. You can create topics before you create assignments, or you have the ability to create a topic on the assignment creation screen. Every assignment should have a topic.

Creating topics in Google Classroom

Topics in Google Classroom are not visible to students if there are no posted assignments in the topic. If a topic has been scheduled, or there are draft assignments only, the topic will still be invisible. This allows you to plan out all of your topics and organize your classroom for the term without cluttering up the Classwork page before the students are ready for the material.
