Welcome to the School of Ice—we have looked forward to this day for over a year! I hope your travels were uneventful!

I’d like to point out our facilitators and we will each introduce ourselves in more detail later during our introductory activity.

We have taken the threat of COVID seriously from the beginning and have made decisions on the best data at the time and have remained flexible as the evidence changed. Thank you for taking the COVID test before entering the workshop—we appreciate OSU providing those tests for us.

When I was a little girl, I thought that science was settled and we had learned all there was to know—the answers were in the back of the teacher’s science book, or in the Encyclopedia or National Geographic—NASA’s space program changed that belief for my generation and the pandemic has given us a lesson today on how science works. With such rapidly changing information, this is an opportunity for us to help our students understand the process and nature of science as well as data and evidence and also to help them recognize valid sources. In this workshop you will have the chance to meet scientists who work on the cutting edge of climate science and explore their process in person.

Please be vigilant about hand washing and wear masks in situations where you feel the need to protect yourself or others

In this workshop we hope to build your background knowledge about ice core and climate science by bringing in speakers who are on the front lines of climate change research. I know I learn something new in every one of these workshops--we hope you will too.

We will ask you to wear two hats: that of a student and that of a teacher as we present teaching pedagogy strategies based on a constructivist learning model—One of our core beliefs is what we refer to as an ABC approach: Activity Before Content. We believe that before learners can assimilate new knowledge, their background knowledge must be activated.

We will be provide examples of how science and engineering are related and look at how their processes are similar and different.

And finally we will give you the opportunity to explore how to bring all of this together in your own courses
