What does that mean...

  • The BES (Black-Eyed Susan) Award is an award given to 1 picture book, 1 chapter book and 1 graphic novel each year.
  • Students in Maryland get to select the book that wins the award from the choices in each category.

Guidelines to vote

Picture Books:

  • Who can read them?
    • EVERYONE
  • How many do you have to read?
    • At least read 8 of the 15 picture books nominated. We are reading these together.

Chapter Books and Graphic Novels:

  • How many do you have to read?
    • Students must read at least 3 of the nominated books from that list.
    • Voting has to be completed by April 20th!

Why should students participate in the BES Challenge?

  • You get to read some really awesome books!
  • If you read 3 or more books (from one list) you get to vote and have your voice heard!
  • If you read 8 or more chapter books and/or graphic novels you will be invited to be part of the end of the year celebration.
  • If you read all of the books on a list, your name goes on the BES All Star Wall!

Deadlines….

  • You must complete the reflection sheets in order to vote.
  • You must read 3 or more books from one list (Chapter books or Graphic Novels)
  • All votes (rating sheets) are due to Mrs. Enck by April 20, 2020!!

At WES we have 2 copies of each Black Eyed Susan Nominee so many titles will be put on hold. You don't have to wait around! Feel free to visit the Frederick County Public Library and borrow their copies as well.��Do you have an e-Reader? Digital copies count too!

3.) Tell me if you would recommend this book to a friend and why or why not.�
