Authorization Improvements

A new FreeIPA LDAP service is being developed for the HPC cluster that will replace the local password and group files. Currently password and group files are rebuilt daily at 6:30pm and syncronized across all the cluster nodes. The new service will allow closer to real time updates for adding and removing HPC cluster access for accounts and HPC group membership.

LDAP service is fully populated with HPC accounts and groups and is being updated as new accounts and projects are added. Continuing work to address performance issues.

Continuing to debug issues along with Red Hat - primarily performance related issues vs functionality

Linux 9 Update

CentOS 7.9 reached end of regular support in June 2024

  • Security updates underway today are the last updates for CentOS 7.9
  • To maintain security compliance will need to move to new Linux version

All available cluster login and compute nodes have been updated to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.2

VCL HPC CentOS 7.9 image remains available if needed for helping with debugging

Linux 9 Compilers

On RHEL 9, generally, recommend to use:

GCC – Use the system GCC. It’s version 11.3.1 and it is pretty recent.

Intel compiler/MPI – Use the 2024 version

module load PrgEnv-intel/2024.1.0

OpenMPI – Use the one built on RHEL 9

module load openmpi-gcc/openmpi5.0.3-gcc11.3.1

Linux 9 Compilers

On RHEL 9, generally, recommend to NOT use:

  • Intel compilers older than 2020
  • PGI compilers - use Nvidia compilers
