What happened

  • 5 men of the North Shore Regiment were marching through to get to the next town. When they turned the corner of a chateau, they could not see past, they were in the direct line of fire of a MG 42. Buell ran into the opening of the chateau during the fire while the others dropped to the ground. Once they had the chance, they threw a smoke grenade but stood up to early resulting in all four men getting shot, Savage was the sole of the four to survive as the shot hit Macnaughton first before hitting him.

Why it's important

  • This event shows how unexpected everything was in the war and how quick tragedies were to happen.
  • Archie Macnaughton was a company commander and was an important figure in the NSR as he was an important role model to many soldiers.
  • Archie Macnaughton did not have to go to the second world war, but he felt it was his duty to go to war again

Lessons learned

  • The NSR learned that they must be 100% certain an area is cleared before they send in troops because you never know what can happen unexpectedly
