After World War I, Russia went through a big change. In 1917, a group called the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, took control of the country. They didn’t like the old way of ruling and wanted to make Russia a communist country, where everyone would share things equally. This change, called the Russian Revolution, led to the creation of the Soviet Union, which was very different from the countries in Western Europe.

For example, in Germany, the government printed too much money to pay for the costs of the war and to rebuild. As a result, prices for food and other goods skyrocketed, and people needed huge amounts of money just to buy everyday items like bread. This made life even harder for ordinary people and caused anger toward the government.

These dictators promised to fix problems but used fear and violence to keep power, which made life difficult for many people.
