An alone individual space to get into flow or be reflective. Get away from the busy in order to really concentrate

• Independent
• Contained activities (eg a book or device only)
• Focused/settled and in the ‘zone’
• Confident and know what to do
• A teacher should not have to talk to you and you don’t want to be interrupted

Ako Space

An activity or workshop space led by a teacher, student or screen

• Discussion and contribution
• Sitting around a central ‘expert’
• Equipment to use
• Imparting knowledge/ learning from

Mahinga

A studio space where students can collaborate, share or be inspired together

• Productive, constructive noise
• Big/creative projects/busy/messy
• Collaborative or independent (not everyone is doing the same work)
• Supporting each other

Āwhina

A safe place to seek support from others

• Can be in for a short or long time
• People talking quietly helping and helping
• Experts nearby or people who like to help
• Buddy learning space
• Resources to support eg. equipment and wall displays
• Purposeful (both those needing help and those giving)

What are Pōhutukawa spaces used for?

• Kotahi (to be alone): working independently and silently without being interrupted by anyone.
• Ako Space (to learn, study, instruct): working in a group that is led by a teacher, student or screen. We will hear learning discussions and see learning equipment being used.
• Mahinga (to collaborate, share, inspire): working independently or collaborating in a group where you are constructing a project and a bit noisy and messy.
• Āwhina (to seek support): working with an expert in a safe space to solve a learning problem.
