Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, Costa Rica

How is this a sustainability issue?

Areas of forest were taken over for other purposes such as cattle farming, causing denuding (which means to strip something of its cover or making it bare) and eroding land (which means to gradually destroy or be destroyed). In this case the cattle are getting rid of the tree faster than they can grow back, and eventually be completely wiped out.

Trees are necessary for some of the following reasons.

-Trees help slow down global warming because they take carbonized out of the air.

-Trees provide oxygen for us the breath.

-Trees help provide habitats for animal.

-Trees protect trees from erosion.

What are the consequences of the problem?

These are some consequences of the problem.

- If the problem keeps going on there with be no more trees eventually.

-Trees make oxygen so no trees, means less oxygen.

-Without trees there would be more carbon dioxide which would increase the speed of global warming.

-Without trees there will be less habitats for animals.

-The roots of the trees help to stop erosion, if there are no trees erosion would happen a lot more.

Who is affected by the problem?

The people that live in Costa Rica and the animals that are native are affected the most, but everyone else is affected as well. Everyone is affected by this problem because once all the trees are gone in one area they will move to the next area until there are no more trees. Then everyone around the world would have less oxygen.

Why do you think we should care about the problem?

I think we should care because it is a big issue. This issue could reduce a good chunk of the oxygen in the world, which is not good since we need oxygen to live. The issue can be fixed if we act now but if we don’t it could get really bad and unfixable. Our ancestors preserved the environment for us and we should do the same for the generations ahead of us.

What is being done to solve the problem?/Are there examples of the solutions happening currently?

People at the reserve are planting trees in areas like the ones taken over and wrecked by the cattle. They have taken a lot of time to research where the best place to plant trees are and other things, such as, what kinds of trees are native and grow fast. The reason they are concerned about the speed of the growth of the the tree is so they are commercially profitable. Also you are able to volunteer at the reserve and help out. Lasty you can donate money to the reserve.

What is being done to solve the problem?/Are there examples of the solutions happening currently?

There are multiple nature reserves all over the world. One reserve in ontario the Cawthra mulock nature reserve, is trying to rebuild and preserve the land. Mission Blue is a project to protect the ocean, in the ocean there are spots called hope spots which are very important to the health of the ocean and animals. At the Cloudbridge Reserve they are protecting an on land hope spot almost, because the forest is very important for the health of the animal living there.

What options are available?/Are there examples of the solutions happening currently?

There are multiple ways to help. One is donations, the people working at the reserve need money to keep the reserve up and running, you can donate money on their website. Another way to help is volunteering at the reserve. Volunteering really helps the reserve grow, when volunteering you maintain the paths, plant trees, maintain trees, and other projects. Lastly planting trees, planting trees is huge for the problem because the problem is the lack of trees.

List one thing you can personally do about it

Right now I can’t volunteer but I can donate. Donating is a good way to help, the money is used for the reforestation project and education. When I am old enough to volunteer I will, when you volunteer you maintain the paths, plant trees, maintain trees, and other projects. Also I could tell my friends and family about the problem, I could put up signs so lots of people could get involved.
