The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini is a traditional Albanian customary law, primarily from the 15th century, that historically governed aspects of life from family and property to honor and conflict resolution
Key aspects of Kanun:
Gjakmarrja (Blood Feud):
The most well-known aspect, where a death necessitates retaliation by a male relative to restore family honor, often leading to cycles of violence
An overarching principle dictating social standing and influencing actions, with damage to honor requiring redress, often through a blood feud
The Kanun establishes a male-dominated society where women have few rights, are unable to own property, and are expected to be submissive
Social Order:
Beyond blood feuds, the Kanun also provided detailed rules for family life, inheritance, property, hospitality, and trade
