First Uses for Airplanes

During peacetime, people put on airshows to make money. The first air show was in France in 1909. Pilots did tricks to entertain people.

Planes got better. They could fly higher and farther.

Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly nonstop by himself (solo) across the Atlantic Ocean in May of 1927. Amelia Earhart flew across the Atlantic in 1932.

People started using jet-powered planes in World War II (1939-1945).

Jet engines were invented by Frank Whittle in England in 1937.

First Supersonic Aircraft

Bell Laboratories made a plane that could fly faster than sound. They were in the United States. The year was 1946. Going faster than sound is called “supersonic”.

Passenger Airplanes

Invention of the Passenger Jet

Sir Geoffrey de Havilland thought of DH106 ‘Comet’ in 1943 and it first flew on 27 July 1949.

In 1958, passenger jets started taking paying customers across the Atlantic Ocean.
