Blueprint Meetings

Blueprint Meeting Home Page

“The Blueprint Activity is designed to inform the development and evolution of the IRIS-HEP strategic vision. At its core, it is a series of workshops that bring together IRIS-HEP team members, key stakeholders and domain experts from disciplines of importance to the Institute’s mission. The Blueprint Activity facilitates the Institute’s role as an intellectual hub for software and computing R&D in high-energy particle physics and beyond.”

We have $$ to send people to these, even (and especially) if they are not part of IRIS-HEP!!

The Process

  • Person responsible plans for the meeting
    • Successful meeting is no more than 30 people, short and concentrated - 2.5 days?
      • Depends a bit on the topic.
    • Needs clear goal (product, note, report, discussion goal, etc.)
    • Hosting institution

Topical Meetings

IRIS-HEP topical meetings cover one or more presentations involving IRIS-HEP researchers or from related research areas. They are typically held Mondays 17:30 GVA and Wednesdays 18:00 GVA. Vidyo connections are always available and meetings are usually recorded.

Two are currently scheduled:

Building a Teaching Assistant Chatbot using GPT-4” and “Tiled: Service for Structured Data Access

Process is very simple!

BluePrint Ideas for Larger Than IRIS-HEP

  • Coordinated Ecosystem for HL-LHC Computing
    • Should occur ~ every two years. Last one in Nov 2022 -> Fall 2023.
    • Follow up earlier with the international benchmarking and P5 report released?
    • The Nelson memo (OpenData)?
  • Analysis Preservation
    • Experiments seem to be pulling back a little from HEPData, and perhaps more from REANA
    • Time to gather experimentalists and theorists to see what the appropriate level is, tooling?
    • Summer 2024?
    • Also Nelson memo (OpenData)
  • What is a HL-LHC Analysis?
    • Data sizes? Methods? Precision vs Discovery
    • Representative analyses? (“a analysis”)
    • Ignore solutions explicitly - just talk about framing the problem
    • Can we build a new ADL benchmarks
  • XROOT - Sustainability
  • Analysis Techniques
    • Explicitly including beyond the LHC
    • Outreach we are working on
    • Analysis eco-system workshop - add to that meeting?
  • DOE National Labs released a report on AI - 200 pages, making a case to congress
    • Where are we in that? How should that work with Office of Science?
    • AI for Science, Energy, and Security Report

Analysis preservation

  • Story for service preservation
    • How to run an analysis in 10 years that requires ServiceX version X and the current one is X+40
    • Which things need to be packaged? Which can be assumed to still exist?
  • Is it a solved story of where we store all the images we might need?
  • What kind of functionality is missing today to package up a complex analysis pipeline?

“Internal” blueprints?

  • Future of SSL: R&D and hardware
    • The river cluster is near or at EOL. Build a coherent vision for the next steps.
  • IRIS-HEP and CPSC
    • Part of the coordinated eco-system panel?
    • Including non-LHC experiments
