History

  • introduced by Senator Gaylord Nelson in spring of 1970 to bring environmental issues to the national agenda
    • followed by demonstrations in various cities with 20 million Americans
  • December 1970- Congress created EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to address environmental issues
  • later grew globally- in 1990, 200 million people in over 140 nations participated

21.77% of the U.S. and Puerto Rico and 26.02% of the lower 48 states are in drought

How can you make a change

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
  • Check faucets and pipes for leaks
  • Take shorter showers
  • Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge

energy friendly petitions and sign!

Energy conservation is reducing the consumption of energy by living organisms. Energy is conserved to reduce the cost of consumption and to preserve the limited existing resources of energy.

Light Pollution and non-renewable sources can be prevented by conserving our energy, methods that can be used are…

  • Smart Bulbs (LED): Brighter while using less power
  • Solar Panels: Not using fossil fuels as power to heat/run homes
    • there is an ongoing 30% tax credit if you purchase a solar panel between now and 2034 (Solar Investment Tax Credit)
  • Public Transportation/Electric vehicles/Carpools: Lowers carbon emissions
  • Buying eco-friendly produced goods: Does not use fossil fuels to power factories

Current issues that are affecting the Marine Life Conservation

-Ocean acidification.

-Climate change and warming ocean temperatures→ Sea level rise.

-Reducing bycatch in marine fisheries and entanglements in fishing gear

Changes for the better!!

The High Seas Treaty aims to help place 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, to safeguard and recuperate marine nature.

  • Areas will put limits on how much fishing can take place
  • The routes of shipping lanes and exploration activities like deep sea mining

- When minerals are taken from a sea bed 200m or more below the surface.

  • Fast fashion: model of clothing production with fast production, and low prices, significant environmental impact
  • Fashion industry: responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and waste
  • Earth Day promotes sustainable practices, including in fashion industry
  • Consumers can reduce impact for Earth Day by buying second-hand, repairing, and minimizing waste

Changing Harmful Habits

  • Reducing plastic dependency
    • recycling properly via plastic codes on products
    • using alternative items to plastic
  • Food waste
    • composting! (with a compost bin)
      • can use in own garden or give to local farms
      • Mill bin- turns into food grounds and ships to farms
  • shopping habits
    • reducing shopping tendencies- saves money!
    • buying sustainable products (ethically sourced)- good for environment and people
  • reusing and upcycling products
    • clothing- avoid clothing waste piling landfills and chemicals entering natural waterways
    • gift wrapping- reusing fabrics, bags, tissue paper, old clothes, painted newspapers

Impact

Humans impact the physical environment in many ways: overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation.

  • This means that the habits we change need to be small and easy to stick to
  • If globally we are able to stick to small habit changes like (These would be the most Impactful):
    • Eating more plant based
    • Using and buying less products
    • Reduce Traveling

Then we can at least maintain the state our Earth is in at the moment. By doing this we can preserve animal species and environments better and although we cannot make the current state of the planet better we can try to improve our habits.

Thank you for all your help and support, we have successfully concluded our thrift shop on April 7th with the grand total of $204!

We will be donating all of these proceeds to Solar Washington to continue their solar education programs!

Earth Day at the Arboretum

Volunteer Opportunities

Earth Day with EarthCorps

Help restore the forest surrounding Kubota Garden by removing weeds, maintaining areas (mulching), and planting trees and shrubs.

  • Sat, April 22, 10 am-1 pm

Arboretum Foundation, UW Botanic Gardens, Seattle Parks and Recreation will co-host their annual Earth Day community and volunteer event; help restore the forest surrounding the garden by removing invasive ivy and blackberry, and by mulching and weeding the plant collections!

WHEN: Saturday, April 22, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Homeward Pet Adoption Center Volunteer Opportunity

You can apply for a position as a volunteer related to either pet care, assistant, and even as a receptionist
