Everyday Math

During March, we went through Unit 7 of Everyday Math as well as prepared for the state assessment (Illinois Assessment of Readiness or IAR). A great deal of the lessons in Unit 7 were challenging as they were story problems that required many different steps. Some of the content covered was:

  • Converting Liquid Measures with US Customary Units
  • Multiplying Fractions by Whole Numbers and Multiplying Mixed Numbers by Whole Numbers
  • Number Stories Involving:
    • Multistep Division
    • Measurement Conversions
  • Displaying and Interpreting Data in Line Plots

Wonders

This month, we skipped ahead in Wonders, so we could complete “The Best Part of Me” project, which is a highlight in fourth grade!

  • Free Verse Poetry
  • Figurative Language → rhyme, rhythm, repetition, simile, metaphor, personification, sensory details, alliteration
    • Defining these terms
    • Identifying these in poetry
    • Incorporating these into our own writing and poems
  • Writing our own free verse poem with the idea of “The Best Part of Me”
  • Prepositions
  • Homophones

Reminder: Wonders is our English Language Arts curriculum. It focuses on reading, writing, grammar, but it incorporates science & social studies.

    • Fractions
    • Decimals

Iditarod

When learning about the 50 states, the class was intrigued by Alaska. The idea of dog sledding/racing came up, which spiraled into a great learning opportunity of learning about the Iditarod and the serum run of 1925, where Balto and Togo were seen as heroes.

Piggybacking on the students’ interests, we followed the Iditarod race this month! Each student picked a musher, and they used morning work time to track their musher.

Through the morning work project, students learned:

  • About Alaska and how it is drastically different than Illinois.
  • How to read military time.
  • How to incorporate content we have been learning in ELA and Math to write poems and solve math problems about the Iditarod. (To see some of their work, look at some of the later slides in the newsletter.)

What Did We Learn in March?

Independent Reading (AR Reading)

-4A’s March Newsletter-

Ms. Davidshofer

Student received a new BINGO board, which is on green paper, at the beginning of March. Their BINGO for this quarter is due May 19th For more information about this quarter’s BINGO board, please see the bright green BINGO board in your child’s folder.

Remember: In recent years due to the pandemic, AR quizzes have had a little more flexibility. However, with the pandemic mostly behind us, it’s 4th grade policy that ALL AR quizzes must be taken at school. Therefore, all future quizzes must be taken at school. students have opportunities to take AR quizzes during morning work, centers, Ketchup & Pickles (aka study hall), so there are multiple opportunities throughout the day for AR quizzes here at school

Central Code

March’s Social Emotional Learning focus was aware. During this month the students learned about how to talk to people, not about people.

In the coming months, we will continue to learn about what it means to be a Central Trojan by focusing on the different traits that make up a Trojan.

The 4A winner for aware will be announced at a later date due to school getting out early on March 31st for the weather. With school getting out early, we were unable to have our assembly for awareness.

To Be Announced at a Later Date

Thanks to all of the students that were featured in March.

Every student will get their own week throughout the year. The week before your child’s assigned week, your student will be given a piece of paper with more information about what to bring and information to have ready.

Upcoming Weeks are:

After Spring Break → Kai

Central Intermediate’s Grade Scale

Just a reminder: here is the CIS grade scale, which is how your child will be scored on assignments & assessments. If your child does not show mastery on an assignment or assessment, they’ll be required to redo until they can show mastery. Often, they’ll receive some reteaching during centers or ketchup and pickles (study hall) to help ensure they understand the content.

Typing Practice + Games

Does your child need some more practice to become more efficient with typing on their Chromebook? We are making typing more of a focus this semester, and students are going to have specific lessons to accomplish each week during centers. In addition to the lessons, there are also numerous typing games found, on typing.com as well as the 4A website. The games are linked at the bottom of the student links portion. Some of these games are a lot of fun if I must admit.
