Personalization in a world language classroom

What does personalization in a world language classroom mean, anyway?

It’s DIFFERENT with a second language...

Deciding on an approach: Negotiated Curriculum!

Goals and plans

  • Engage in the negotiated curriculum process with three classes: (6th, 7th, 8th)

Both long term, broad scope curriculum and unit planning (first unit of the year: Food)

  • Create playlists as a tool for delivering the curriculum
  • Find ways to personalize content
  • Continue to implement blended learning

Honoring Student Voice and Choice

How personalization has been realized in Spanish food unit so far this year:

  • Introduction to foods within context of the market (market video, note taking on important words)
  • Personalized vocabulary lists based on 7 food categories: Vegetables, Fruits, Snacks, Dishes, Meals, Proteins, Desserts
  • Basic conversations about meals, eating and drinking, sharing our favorite foods from our personalized lists
  • Class survey about food preferences - 7 categories plus one choice category
  • Survey presentations My presentation example
  • Kahoot - foods we learned

20 of 34

  • Making food! We learned about Pan de muerto (the bread of the dead) and made it in class. We made two large loaves for the class to eat together, and students got to each make their own mini loaves (Also watched The Book of Life!)
  • Restaurant vocabulary
  • Videos on how to order in a restaurant
  • Skit writing in small groups - restaurant scene (students provided a list of the people they felt they would work well with)
  • Skit performances are coming up next week!

What about 6th grade?!

22 of 34

Another approach to personalization in 6th grade

  1. Introduce the 6th grade curriculum scope and sequence
  2. Teach about Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory
  3. Gather data on student learning styles and preferences

What about 5th grade?!

Another approach to personalization in 5th grade

Using Comprehensible Input Methods to Personalize Language: A natural choice!

  1. Use CI to teach targeted structures (verbs, vocabulary, grammar) through sharing about myself
  2. Gather student data on personal interests and opinions
  3. Use student data to create personalized slides in the target language
  4. Use “La persona especial” slides to teach targeted structures

25 of 34

Students are the curriculum with CI!

  1. Draw something you like or somewhere you have been. On back:

Favorite food(s), Favorite animal(s),

A fun fact about you!

  • Complete a personal survey so I can learn more about you
  • I create La persona especial slides
