Overview of Services Offered

Individual Therapy

  • Free for full-time students & evening Law Students
  • Up to 1x/week for 10 sessions→ biweekly after that if needed
  • 45-session lifetime limit
  • A combination of in-person therapy and teletherapy (for students in DC, MD, and VA) is being offered

Group Therapy

  • Free for all students, usually 80 minutes, variety of topics

Medication Consultation

  • Current CUACC individual therapy clients only (must be in DC)

Same-Day Services

  • Free initial meeting for all enrolled students
  • “Let’s Talk”
  • Emergency consult

Same-Day Appointments �(arrive between 12-3PM, daily)

Let’s Talk

  • Support, suggestions and recommendations to address specific concern
  • Informal meeting for non-urgent matters
  • Brief: 20- 30 minutes
  • Maximum of 2 per semester

Urgent or Emergency

  • In crisis (danger to self or others, recent sexual assault, psychotic symptoms etc.)
  • Safety evaluation
  • May last a bit longer
  • Likely Follow up

**To make a same-day appointment, call the Counseling Center. In the event of a psychiatric emergency not on campus, we encourage clients to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or go to their nearest Emergency Room for the most immediate care.

FAQs – Counseling Center Edition

  • How do I start therapy at the counseling center?
    • Call the front desk or drop by!
  • How long do I have to wait for a first appointment?
    • Intakes (first appointment to get set up for therapy) are first come-first served; wait time is longer later in the semester.
    • Same day appointments are available daily! (M-F)
  • Can I go to the counseling center for medication only?
    • You must be in individual therapy with us to meet with psychiatry. We do not provide medication for ADHD.
  • Where is O’Boyle Hall?
    • We are located on the northwest side of campus up the hill.

Confidentiality

  • Client rights to confidentiality are protected by District of Columbia law, the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Code and the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics. It is both illegal and unethical to violate rights to confidentiality.

  • Any student 18 or older must give written permission to allow the release of information regarding any contact with the center.

  • Exceptions to confidentiality include when there is risk of immediate danger to self or others, report of abuse or neglect to vulnerable populations (i.e. children, older adults, individuals with disabilities), and in the rare event of a court order.
