Program History

  • CLYLP Inc. was established in 1982 by a group of Latino professionals who identified the need to provide leadership training for Chicano/ Latino youth and prepare them to become “California’s Future Leaders”

Why was there a need for CLYLP 35 years ago?

  • Very few Latinos involved in Government
  • No structured pathway to develop sustainable Latino leadership
  • High school students not involved in their campus leadership clubs
  • Chicano/Latino students were rarely included in programs such

as Boys and Girls State

SOLUTION:

A five-day leadership conference focusing on “The Four C’s:

  • The mission of the CLYLP is to enhance and further develop the leadership potential of California’s youth as they prepare to become the future leaders of our state and nation
  • “….to provide Latino Youth from the public schools of California with the opportunity to learn about specific problems that affect the Latino/Chicano population in our contemporary society. Students will be taught how our state democratic system functions, and through leadership workshops will be encouraged to focus on methods needed to resolve social problems through united democratic action.”
