Overlap your edges

Coat your pieces with glue, and put a tiny bit of glue on the mask to attach the newsprint. Cover the whole front and wrap the edge front to back.

Paper Mache Tips

  • Patience is key!
  • Anchor a piece of glue paper on one side and follow it up, down and around the features to the end of the paper
  • If your paper wrinkles when you put it on the mask, the piece is too big. Take it off, rip smaller and try again
  • Paper glues best to paper. When covering masking tape, anchor the glue paper to another piece of paper if you can.

Painting Tips

  • The emotional associations we have with different colors vary by our cultures.
  • Colors tend to look darker dry than when wet. Mix with this in mind.
  • Use a test paper to try out colors and how they might work together
  • Blend shadows and highlights into the base to make a gradual transition.
  • Explore and remember: You can always repaint it if you don’t like the result.

Base Color: which color supports the feeling?

Find (or mix) your base color, test on paper and paint your mask. If color looks thin, you can put two coats.

In a new section of you palette, take some of your base color and mix with white to find a highlight color

You can layer your paints for effect.

A wash in painting is a thin mixture of paint and water.

Some red wash over the lips can make your mask more human.
