Precautions to follow when operating a heat gun:
- Always inspect the heat gun before each use. Ensure the cord is not damaged. Remove from service is damage is found.
- Always switch the tool off before putting it down.
- Always turn off and unplug the heat gun when not in use.
- Always allow the heat gun to cool before storing.
- Always plug directly into a wall outlet. If using an extension cord, refer to Electrical Safety Manual section 5.5.15 for guidance.
- Always use NRTL listed heat guns.
- Use an outlet a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) where possible.
- Never touch the hot metal nozzle.
- Never direct the air flow towards one’s body.
- Never use a heat gun near flammable or combustible materials.
Be Aware of Heat Gun Hazards
Heat guns are typically used in research lab areas to dry glassware, cure resin, accelerate evaporation, and the application of heat shrink tubing. Although a heat gun appears the same as a blow dryer, it is a completely different type of equipment that can operate at very high temperatures (1200F) where materials can easily melt.
