WHAT IS A RÉSUMÉ?

  • A résumé a document that is used to apply for a job, internship, scholarship or to support a college application
  • It is a summary of your education, extracurricular activities, skills sets, work/volunteer experiences and accomplishments
  • A résumé is a tool to market YOU!

WHAT DOES A RÉSUMÉ TELL THE VIEWER?

  • Who you are!
  • What position you are seeking
  • What skills and attributes you possess
  • What you have accomplished
  • How you can add VALUE to their organization
  • For high school students, a résumé should be one page in length
  • It should be visually appealing, easy to read and error free
  • Your résumé should be professional and positive!

Examples of Using Action Verbs

Athlete - member of Volleyball team

Verbs to use: acquired (skills), trained, supported, participated, organized, motivated

  • Example: Acclimate new members to the team each year through weekly dinners, captains’ practices, and other social gatherings.

Service - volunteer at the Food Pantry

Verbs to use: collaborated, distributed, organized, assisted, generated

  • Example: Organized the collection of over 500 items during the Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Writing the Description

Gather information for each bullet

  • Start by brainstorming the tasks you completed, then think through:
    • What did I do to accomplish the task?
    • How did I do it? (Be specific.)
    • Why did I do it? (Identify the purpose.)
    • What happened after I did it? What did I improve? What was the impact? Was I successful? (Quantify, quantify, quantify.)

Soft Skills vs. Hard Skills

The SKILLS section of your résumé shows the viewer you have the abilities to succeed in the role. As you think about your skill sets be sure to include both Hard Skills and Soft Skills.

HARD skills are those that are acquired most often through education and specific training while SOFT skills are personal habits and traits that shape how you work
