SOA

  • 6 “tracks”
    • ERM, QFI, ILA, RET, GH, GI
      • (No one chooses General Insurance)
  • 31000 members worldwide
  • More finance-y, business acumen

What is SOA? What is CAS?

  • SOA deals with life insurance, health insurance, and pension and retirement planning.
    • International!

  • CAS deals with property and casualty insurance: all non-life insurance products
    • Less populous than SOA

CAS

  • One “track”
  • Covers a lot! Some more obscure lines of business:
    • Worker’s Comp, Marine (bridges), Professional Liability, Mortgages, Construction, etc…
  • Work is constantly evolving: dealing with many factors such as legislation more likely to change, climate change,
    • Thus, increasing interest for innovation: using GLMs for pricing
  • Generally thought to be more statistical/data science-y (but always exceptions!)
