What is Rayon?

Rayon is a fabric made from cellulose in trees, just like paper!

DISCOVERING RAYON

THE FABRIC MADE FROM TREES!

Trees

Pulp

Pushed through

tiny holes

Thread/

Yarn

Woven into fabric

3 of 7

Each fabric is different in the family or ‘Rayon’.

Modal, Lyocell & Tencel are strong and more durable.

Rayon can shrink and lose shape but can still be considered a durable fabric

How is it used?

Clothing, bedding, and more.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF RAYON

Renewable?

Biodegradable?

Durable?

Made from trees that are renewable plants (replanted after harvest)

Some rayon fabrics such as Lyocell & Tencel are biodegradable.

What is Plastic?

A material made from crude oil.

DISCOVERING PLASTIC

Get oil:

Moulding

5 of 7

How is it used?

Plastic is used in packaging, toys, electronics, and many household items.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF PLASTIC

TYPES OF PLASTIC – COMMON TYPES INCLUDE PET (USED IN BOTTLES),

HDPE (IN MILK JUGS), AND PVC (FOR PIPES).

Renewable?

Biodegradable?

Durable?

Most are not renewable as they are made from non-renewable resources like petroleum.

Can remain in land fill for hundreds of years but can be recycled.

It is very durable but also contributes to long-lasting waste.

What is Stainless Steel?

Made from metals mined from the ground

DISCOVERING STAINLESS STEEL

Iron + Chromium + Nickel mined from Earth

Melted at 1400-1600OC

Cooled and rolled

Cut into shape

Polished

7 of 7

How is it used?

Food and medical products (easy to keep

clean & sterile), aerospace engineering,

construction, car and boat parts & more!

MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF STAINLESS STEEL

Renewable?

Biodegradable?

Durable?

Made from metals mined from deep in the

earth that have been a part of the Earth

since its formation 4.5 billion years ago.

Can remain in land fill for hundreds of

years but is highly recyclable.

It is very strong and long lasting.
