Our Topic

This quarantine has undoubtedly been tough on everyone. The inability to go places and socialize normally seems to be taking its toll, as well as the virus itself. However, there may be some beneficial parts to this quarantine, and that is the natural environment. Since people are going out less, there is less pollution going on. So we figured, to keep this going even when things get back to normal, we can teach people the proper way to dispose of waste and trash.

Guiding Question

Criterion A (i): define a highly challenging goal to address a need within a community, based on personal interests

Guiding Question:

How can I create a positive impact for people living in Montgomery County by making a presentation on how to recycle more efficiently.

Our project connects to the Global Context globalization and sustainability because we are teaching people how to recycle efficiently so that there will be less pollution.

We exchanged our personal contact information as well as school email when we needed to contact our coach as well.

  • How well did you and your group handle conflict and any obstacles you faced?

Since our community project meetings were on Wednesdays and many Wednesdays were used as school days, we didn’t get to meet with our coach very often but we still managed to pull through with the project.

  • How often did you meet with your coach and did you communicate with your coach outside of coaching sessions?

We usually met with our coach on Wednesdays weekly but sometimes one of us would email him if we had a question on the project.

When Kayla found evidence that air pollution levels had gone down in certain areas we evaluated that to determine the cause. The cause of this was people not going out as much because of quarantine.

  • Were you able to complete the action you planned to take in your Proposal for Action?

Yes, we made a presentation focusing on how to recycle more efficiently.

People can make a good difference for the environment if they put in effort.

  • Why is community service important?(why is it important to help your community?)

The community service project is not only good for addressing issues found in the community, but engaging students in finding solutions to these issues. It lets us help our community, while also getting us involved with a productive and educational activity.

  • Do you think your project was successful? why or why not?

Obviously, we were not able to get the full experience due to the coronavirus, however, my partner and I feel like this project was a good way to engage us while also allowing us to help our community at the same time.
