When the early church was born
Conflict lines with Rome were drawn;
Those who followed Jesus’ way
Knew the risks they took each day.
On chaotic waters tossed
Little churches could be lost;
Boats could wreck in fearful storms;
Violence surged in all its forms.
In the darkest night he’d come;
Help believers not succumb
To the Roman harsh decree;
He’d come walking on the sea.
If they could but keep their eyes
Fixed on Jesus, they could rise;
Stormy dangers, pulling down
Could cause panic. Then they’d drown.
Walk on water! Follow him -
Live the risk! Or should we swim?
By our loving we might see
Marvels like on Galilee.
