How might we action what for whom in order to change something?

To me Student Agency means I am being independent and getting to pick what I need to do to get better as a learner. I really like that feeling of being free...because otherwise school is like a Zoo and we are the animals being trapped in cages being told what tricks to do and when. (Cherry 10)

How might I write my own children’s novel?

Can we encourage people to recycle by designing our own line of recycled clothing?

In what ways can I teach kids around the world to be confident and passionate like me?

What am I able to learn about my own culture?

“I like the freedom to do what I want without needing to hold the teacher’s hand the whole time.” (Amy 10)

Extract from Freya’s nATURE ESSAY 2016

Movenote

Tramping and summiting mountains requires perseverance and stamina and the skill of being able to appreciate the simple things, like amazing views, rustic huts and hard bunk beds, and waking up in the morning; looking out of the window and seeing snow falling. When you're tramping you're free, wide open spaces all around, impressive ridges begging to be conquered, and the draw of them to keep you going. There’s so many different things to look at, and so many things to think about. Imagine getting to the top of a mountain after a gruelling hike, and looking around at the tiny hut, way in the distance and the track winding up the valley, so far away. You have walked that distance, and now you've achieved your goal. There’s the song “On top of the world,” and at this point that’s exactly how you feel, on top of the world, as you breath in the cool mountain air, and take in how high up you are.

Four guiding rules

  1. Frame it as a driving question.
  2. There must be research involved.
  3. The project needs to have a purpose.
  4. It must be shared.

I am only one,

but I am one,

I cannot do everything, but I can do something, and I will not let

interfere with what

I can do.

Students need to know that you can never give up...find something that challenges you so if you fail you learn from your mistakes and do it again until you have success in it. (Alex 10)

TIPS

  • Allow a generous amount of time during ideation
  • Put a lot of time into the planning stages
  • Work hard to motivate/drive enthusiasm/ongoing...
  • Steer clear of fundraisers...projects involving money
  • Take time to share/reflect at the end of each session
