The expectations of the Jews

Include ‘the promised one’

Who, by his great authority,

Proved God’s reign had begun.

John heard in prison, of the things

That Jesus did and said;

John wished to know, “Are you the one?

We must not be misled.” 

Jesus’ reply did not relate

To his identity;

Instead he pointed to his work;

Spoke of his ministry.

“Good news is brought to all the poor;

The blind are made to see;

The dead are raised, the lepers cleansed.

So have no doubt in me!”

If Jesus is ‘the promised one’

For us and for our day,

We need to listen to his life,

To follow in his way.
