The first thing I want you to do is, think about VA as more than what the title suggests - its not just an assessment tool. It’s an amazing engagement tool, collaboration tool and an Assessment tool.

And we know that your campuses are coming out of the pressure cooker of go-live with Brightspace and they will soon be looking for more ways to build engagement and collaboration into their courses. Typically they come up for air looking for third party tools, but they don’t need to do that because you have Video Assignments as a solution already available for them to utilize.

SO, when it comes specifically to engagement, collaboration and assessment, and before we get into the details of Video Assignments - I want to talk about what some of the challenges that your Instructors are facing, and then we can talk about how Video Assignments can help

THe first is Video Presentation which allows a learner to showcase demonstration of knowledge on a specific subject matter, OR it could be a video presentation of hard skill (demonstration of a physical skill), or lastly a verbal walk through of asset creation or demonstration of ability to utilize a specific asset.

Video presentation of knowledge - second language, public speaking, oral presentation on a specific subject matter - great place to practice the three minute thesis presentation grad students need to complete at your institution (especially layered with peer review/feedback)
Video presentation of skill: Healthcare: practical nursing courses showcasing hand hygiene assessment, music class playing instruments or singing, or even american sign language. We see opportunities in Arts and Humanities - performing monologues or artist performances
Walkthrough of an asset: website creation, accounting spreadsheet or ability to code. We see Journalism students walking through their thought process in researching their publication

These are all assessment workflows - but there’s also Engagement and Practice

Assignments can be set up as a place to practice. Individual assignment gives learners multiple opportunities to practice and reflect on their recordings prior to submission or prior to delivering a presentation in person. They can play back their videos but also receive AI based feedback for instant learning/practice opportunities
Engagement - set up as a way to introduce themselves, as a way to provide video based feedback on the content thus far in the syllabus etc

Hot seat type of assignment, put on the spot to answer questions in a limited amount of time. Could be considered a more modern way of doing quizzing, authentically assessing their knowledge - Combat against ChatGPT> Also a great place to complete the final three minute thesis presentations under a timer

OR the new hot topic in education is simulations - simulating a real world scenario which could be impractical to do in real life, or are even dangerous. Or simply too hard to scale in person

Simulations: We see this used a TON in Behavioral sciences programs such as interacting with patients (nursing, pharmaceutical, doctor etc), interacting with an upset patient (counselling), Criminal Justice & Law programs - interacting with a hostage (police training) or interacting with your client for lawyers. In Education programs - how to interact with students, or difficult parents, Travel & Tourism programs - interacting with patrons in restaurants or checking in hotel guests etc. The types of possibilities are endless.
This is a much more immersive and effective way of doing simulations compared to the traditional format of avatars and multiple choice or text based answers
From a scaling perspective as well, allowing for simulations to take place asynchronously instead of in person is a big resource saver
Quiz like experience: answering random questions in video format about an assigned article

Interactive Video is about adding video content into your course.

We know that video Based Learning not only helps in cognitive load reduction, but it also grab viewer attention and add to learner engagement which we know is one of the challenges that your instructors face. Compared to still graphics, audio, or text, video based learning also creates higher recall and retention to a captive and attentive audience.

That being said, we also know that a concern of utilizing video in courses is thinking learners are just passively watching video without actually processing it. We want to ensure learners are engaging with them - because if they don’t engage with them, they won’t learn from them.

Instructor feedback| After individuals complete a Video Assignment, they can receive personalized, time-stamped comments from subject matter experts. Evaluators have the ability to provide this feedback via text or video

Self Assessment| Most assignment types give learners multiple opportunities to practice and reflect on their recordings prior to submission. Learners can also review their performance against rubrics when evaluators use them for scoring. The use of rubrics is a premium feature.

Peer Review| Individuals can also receive text and video feedback from their peers. Evaluators determine how many peer reviews each person completes, how peer review groups are formed, and whether to conceal identities

Auto Analysis| Auto Analysis is an automated reporting feature that generates metrics around rate of speech, speech clarity, use of filler words, and custom content targets. These metrics display within a report, which learners can view prior to submission and evaluators have available during the assessment process. AI Coach solves the challenges of scalability and efficiency by delivering consistent and targeted AI-powered feedback. This allows trainers to ensure uniform learning experiences while accelerating each learner’s skill development. Carefully-crafted AI prompts are integrated into the assignment so instructors can forgo providing continuous supervision during the practice process.

Important to note that all assessments are sent to the gradebook automatically. Evaluation options include Instructor driven scoring (percentage, pass/fail/rubric) or automatic scoring using Auto pass, Peer review scoring, or Auto Analysis score.
