Worker’s ISM Responsibilities

This document provides a succinct overview of your Work Planning Control (WPC) work authorization responsibilities and provides instructions for how to review your WPC activities.

Understand what you are authorized to do

  • Your WPC work activity authorizations communicate the scope of work you are authorized to perform
  • Your role is to (1) make sure that you are authorized to work in the Lab’s WPC system, (2) that the scope of work accurately represents what you do, and (3) that you only perform work that you are authorized to do

Understand the hazards associated with your work

  • You should review the hazards associated with each of your assigned WPC activities and discuss these with your Activity Lead and supervisor
  • You should stop work when the tasks or hazards change so that the work can be re-evaluated. Contact your supervisor or Activity Lead to review

Understand the controls to be used as protection

  • This involves reviewing the controls listed in your assigned WPC activities
  • This involves discussing how the controls are used in the context of your work with your supervisor or Activity Lead.
  • This involves stopping work if the controls are not available, or are not working properly, or as expected

Perform the work safely

  • Before performing your work, you should ensure that you are authorized to perform that work. Are you doing something new? If so, check to be sure you are authorized
  • Complete your required training and any any on-the-job training needed for the work
  • Stop if you have questions or if you see something that seems unsafe and get input from your supervisor or Activity Lead before resuming the work.

Provide feedback

  • As you perform your work, you may develop insights into how to do it more safely and effectively next time
  • Share these insights with your supervisor and Activity lead as well as your colleagues
  • Providing feedback is foundational to continued learning

Reviewing Your Activities

Step 5: Start by clicking Description of Work.

The Description of Work describes what the work entails for this activity. Review this to make sure it represents what you do. If it doesn’t, or if you have questions, contact the Activity Lead. For example, if your work changed you may need to be added to a new activity and removed from the old one.

Step 6: Next, click Hazards & Controls

This section lists the hazards and controls that the Activity Lead identified for this work activity. Take a moment to review these. It is also helpful to review these with your Activity Lead when newly joining an activity. If new hazards are introduced in your work, the Activity Lead is expected to update the activity to include these, and inform all workers on the activity.

Click to view the Description of Work and review this document.
