CONCLUSION:

Soapy is a homeless and a jobless young man of criminal background. He wishes to be in jail to enjoy freedom from hunger and harassment of cops. His only wish to go to jail to as he is not willing to pay for his daily expenses by doing some work. He realised the arrival of winter season by seeing the birds flying towards the west and falling leaves.

The character Soapy doesn't want to accept charity too, to avoid preaching. He doesn’t want to work also as the employers would ask him for his previous jobs. Hence, it was the only way to go to the Blackwell’s Island for three months for safe living by getting free food, safe stay and no harassment from police.

CONCLUSION:

Though he tries to break the law at many places but these were not treated as criminal acts. Eating in restaurants without paying, throwing stones on glass buildings, running away by taking umbrella, behaving like a drunkard youth etc. Whatever he proposes the God disposes.

Soapy seems “doomed to liberty” as he tries to be a “crook” but not successful. This story is ironic and mocking in tone , where Soapy wants to be in jail by doing some mischief, but fails.

It’s an irony of this story when Soapy wants to be a good man. He wants to comeback to mother’s home. He proposed this noble thought but the police arrested him without doing anything and sent him to jail.
