What is a genre?

A genre is a category or type of something and usually refers to books or music.

There are many different types of genres.

Biography

  • A biography is the true story of a person’s � life.

​

  • A biography is written by someone other � than who the book is about. (The author is � going to be a DIFFERENT person than who � the book is about.)

​

  • A biography can be written about a person � who is still living or about someone who � lived in the past.

Autobiography

  • An autobiography is the life story of a � person written by that person.  (The author � and the person who the book is about are � the SAME person.)

  • You can write an autobiography about your � life, but no one else can.

How can you tell which is which?

To figure out if a book is a biography or �an autobiography, look at the title and the author.

If the subject of the book is DIFFERENT than the author of the book, the book is a BIOGRAPHY.

Both BIOGRAPHIES and AUTOBIOGRAPHIES are NON-FICTION.

Both are classified in the Dewey Decimal System as 921 and then the first 3 letters of WHO the book is about.
