Envisioning data best practice: data round tables

Outcome: shared understanding of the current and potential future state of data use to support Internet infrastructure climate resilience.

This workstream will:

  • explore how infrastructure and geohazard (and other) data can help support Internet resilience in climate change in Aotearoa
  • Build understanding of what is going well and where there are opportunities to do things differently to support resilience
  • give participants an opportunity to share their perspective and hear from others working with data.

5 of 16

About this workstream’s activities

  • Data Roundtable 1: sharing experiences of how data has supported internet infrastructure resilience in the context of climate change and/or where systemic data issues have hindered or slowed action from taking place.
  • Data Roundtable 2 to develop visions of what data collection, use and sharing could look like in the future to support resilience.
  • Work to develop an output that can be shared within the Network and publicly (led by project team)

Why data: backgrounder snippets

Understanding and mapping New Zealand’s physical internet infrastructure

How to support a holistic understanding of all New Zealand’s physical internet infrastructure, how data is held across a variety of infrastructure owners, researchers and sectors and made available.

Plus consistent hazard data to inform future decisions

Goal: take stock of the current state and explore actions that could ensure integrated, nationally-consistent information about internet infrastructure and the climate hazards that might affect it

Why data? What is ‘best practice’?

  1. Understanding and prediction
  2. Informed decision-making
  3. Driving innovation in resilience

Phase 2: How have we and can we best use data

Phase 3: How can we best collect, sharing and meet needs of those who will and can use data

About the round table discussion

  • Two rounds where everyone will get a chance to speak – introductions and sharing experiences, with a focus on specific examples where possible
  • Facilitated by Anna and Kelly – we’ll nominate next speakers, ask follow up questions and keep our discussion to time
  • If there are questions from other participants during the round table, please put in the chat or hold onto it until the end
  • The second round of discussion will operate under Chatham House rule – “participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”

Round table topic 1: introductions

We would like to hear:

  • a bit about you and where you are calling in from
  • what brings you here today (to this workstream)
  • what is your specific interest in data in relation to Internet infrastructure and climate resilience.

12 of 16

Round table topic 2: sharing experiences

Each person will have 3 minutes to share their experiences of the current state of infrastructure and hazard data to support Internet resilience in the context of climate change

  • What are the challenges you have faced?
  • What are the opportunities you have identified?

NOTE: If you do not have a specific role in regards to data collection, sharing and use for Internet resilience, you are welcome to be a listener for this round.

Next steps

  • The research team will pull together key themes they heard in this roundtable and circulate to participants for their information
  • The second roundtable will be on 14 October and focus on visions for data best practice to support Internet resilience
