Breakout Session 1: Ōtaki College Deep Dive

PROMPTS:

In the questionnaire data, where are learners getting what they need?

Reading different kinds of texts

More than one text on a topic

Learners knowing what they are learning to do when reading

From the questionnaire data, where could we give it a nudge?

Discussions and opportunities to create need working on

Feedback and next learning steps need to be a focus, alongside being clear with our learners where they are at and the progress they are making

What is our other evidence telling us?

Do students understand certain terms? Choice, share? We need to be explicit

We need to work on increasing reading mileage and reading dispositions

CLUSTER BREAKOUT TWO (2a)

Thursday Before Afternoon Tea | 45 min session

Cluster discussion: What might we do to get closer alignment between learners, teachers, leaders and whānau?

Using our shared pedagogy, when are there opportunities to respond to what our learners are telling us?

Facilitators will note take on the table below

Before Afternoon Tea: Hypothesising

Using our shared pedagogy, when are there opportunities to respond to what our learners are telling us?

Providing more regular opportunities for feedback and feedforward to happen. Identifying ways of making sure students know and recognise the progress they are making. Where can feedback and feedforward happen and from whom? Doesn't just have to be from teacher - eg peer feedback. Strategies for students to act on feedforward.

What might we do to get closer alignment between learners, teachers, leaders and whānau?

More opportunities for collaboration and communication with whānau about the learning that is happening. For example, student led conferences

Ōtaki College Goal

GOAL

Ensure that every learner in our school knows how they are achieving and what progress they have made, and what their next learning steps are

Actions:

  • Share good practice with staff around sharing learning with learners
  • Unpack student reports with staff from testing platforms - what does the data show?
  • Become familiar with new testing tools from Ministry and access PLD for this
  • Build skills with learners progressively - Year 7 & 8, 9 & 10, seniors
  • Build data sharing sessions into staff/department meetings
  • Share reports with students and how to understand them

Evidence:

  • Learners share progress and goals readily when asked
  • Learners are able to share their goals and learning with their parents/caregivers at student led conferences
  • Teachers share PAT reading/maths and e-asTTle and other learning assessments with learners and work through what these mean
  • Teachers have individual assessment conversations with learners termly
  • Teachers are able to use data effectively for planning and teaching
  • Teachers are able to explain their student data and what it means
