Hello families,

  • Welcome to Day 65 of school on Monday, 12/5/25 in Grade 5!
  • On Wednesday, 12/17 we will celebrate day “67’ of school. The fifth graders love to say “six, seven” in class. On this day, we will celebrate this fabulous number together. :)
  • Progress report grades will be readily available soon. Please remind your children about the importance of submitting their classwork and quizzes on time. In addition, homework should be completed and submitted on time, as well.
  • Thank you for all of your help supporting your child to be on time and dressed in full school uniform. As a friendly reminder, crocs are not allowed. In addition, navy and khaki bottoms are allowed only. Black leggings, grey sweatpants, white pants, etc. are not permitted. Denim jeans are also not allowed. When a student is not compliant with the school uniform policy, the principal will be notified. Phone calls home will be made by the principal. Additional disciplinary action will be taken if necessary.

This week, we are learning:

    • Math: Students begin by using number lines to find fractions of a set and realize it is not always efficient to use a number line. As the total number of objects in a set starts to increase, students transition from using number lines to using tape diagrams to find a fraction of a set. (LINK)

    • Reading:
      • Teaching Point:To really understand non-fiction, readers can only take in ideas and information. Readers also need to have responses: thoughts, feelings and questions. Teacher will re-read portions of the mentor text and come up with ways of responding to the text.
      • Active Engagement:Students will work with partners to mark up a mentor text and create a response that gives thoughts, feelings and questions.

    • Science: Throughout the year, we see different stars. But every year on the same date, we see the same stars. Reflecting on a poorly planned investigation can help us do a better job of planning our own systematic investigations. A year is the length of time it takes for Earth to orbit the sun once. To orbit is to move in a regular path around something. The Earth orbits the sun.

    • Social Studies: Social Studies will took place in Marking Period 1. We will learn more Social Studies topics in Marking Period 4.

    • Writing:
      • Connection: CNN 10 - discuss strategies that we have learned for generating story ideas.
      • Teaching Point: Journalists make sure that their writing is clear to their audience by explaining what happened, why it happened, and what might come next.
      • Active Engagement: Teacher will model revising a news story so that readers gain a more accurate understanding of the true meaning. Students will practice this skill by reading stories to their partners and have them identify unclear parts in order to make the stories better.
